What is Skimo?
Ski mountaineering, often called Skimo, is a winter mountain sport that combines uphill and downhill skiing. Using special touring skis, bindings, boots, and skins, skiers can move uphill on snow before removing the skins and skiing back down.
Skimo is actively being developed at Shahdag as an accessible winter activity for visitors who want to experience the mountains beyond traditional downhill skiing. At Shahdag, Skimo can be experienced through introductory instructor-led ski touring lessons, with future opportunities for recreational uphill access, training, and events continuing to develop.
Introductory Skimo lessons at Shahdag
Shahdag Ski School offers introductory Skimo lessons for guests who would like to try ski touring in a safe and guided format. These beginner-friendly lessons are designed for recreational skiers and first-time skimo participants. During the lesson, guests learn how to use ski touring equipment, move uphill on skis, manage basic transitions, and descend safely on approved resort slopes.
Introductory skimo lessons are offered in a half-day format and include ski touring equipment and lift pass. The activity is suitable for recreational beginners and does not require previous Skimo experience, although basic skiing ability is recommended.
Lessons take place on approved beginner and intermediate uphill routes along Palaz and Yamanı 1A slopes, depending on weather, snow conditions, slope operations, and instructor assessment.
Please note that Skimo equipment rental is currently available only as part of an instructor-led lesson through Shahdag Ski School.
Uphill access rules
For the safety of all guests, uphill movement at Shahdag is currently permitted only in approved areas, during resort operating hours, and under instructor supervision.
Uphill skiing involves moving along or near active ski slopes, where downhill skiers may be descending at speed. For this reason, all Skimo participants must follow instructor guidance, resort rules, slope signage, and ski patrol instructions at all times.
Uphill access is only permitted during official slope operating hours. Access before or after operating hours is not allowed, as snow grooming machinery and other resort operations may be active on the slopes.
Guests participating in Skimo lessons must remain on the designated side of the slope, stay as far to the edge as possible, and remain aware of downhill skiers at all times. Uphill movement may be restricted, changed, or cancelled depending on weather, snow conditions, events, slope operations, or safety requirements.
At this stage, ski touring equipment rental and uphill movement are available only through instructor-led lessons. Independent uphill access for general guests is not currently permitted.
Routes and maps
A basic Skimo map may be added to this page, showing permitted uphill routes, restricted areas, route difficulty, distance, elevation gain, and recommended user level.
Shahdag is developing a dedicated Skimo route system to make winter uphill movement clearer and easier to understand for guests.
For the previous winter season, uphill movement was piloted on the following resort routes:
| Route | Distance | Elevation gain | Suggested level |
| Şəddə/Slope No. 4 | 721 m | +90 m | Beginner / introductory |
| Yamanı 1A | 3,062 m | +500 m | Intermediate / longer uphill route |
Approved routes may change depending on the season, snow conditions, slope operations, and resort safety decisions.
Future route information may indicate whether a route is suitable for instructor-led lessons, recreational uphill use, or athlete training.
Safety information
Skimo is a winter mountain activity and must be practiced with attention to weather, snow conditions, visibility, skier ability, slope operations, and avalanche risk.
Introductory Skimo lessons at Shahdag take place on approved resort routes and under instructor supervision. Guests must not enter closed slopes, restricted zones, or off-piste areas without approval.
Off-piste and backcountry Skimo depend on snow conditions, weather, avalanche conditions, skier experience, equipment, and resort permission. Any off-piste movement within or near the resort should be carefully assessed according to safety, snow stability, visibility, ability level, proximity to marked slopes, and emergency access.
Guests are responsible for following all resort rules and safety instructions. Access to any route may be restricted or closed at any time due to changing conditions.
Skimo events, athletes, and training
Shahdag is already home to the national ski mountaineering team, and has hosted several international ISMF ski mountaineering events, making it an important base for the development of the sport in Azerbaijan.
The resort is working to strengthen its role as a destination for Skimo training, events, and winter mountain sport. Visiting athletes, clubs, and teams interested in training opportunities at Shahdag may contact the resort in advance to discuss access conditions, route availability, facilities, and support services.
Training access is subject to resort approval, slope conditions, safety requirements, and operational schedules. Depending on availability and prior arrangement, athlete support may include access to designated uphill training routes, Ski Club facilities, equipment preparation areas, wax room access, gym facilities, lockers, accommodation, food options, and recovery services.
Resort facilities
Shahdag offers a convenient base for guests trying Skimo for the first time, as well as athletes and teams visiting for training or events.
Guests can combine Skimo activities with the resort’s wider winter infrastructure, including ski-in/ski-out accommodation, ski school services, equipment rental, lockers, restaurants and cafés, spa and recovery options, and direct access to the slopes.
Whether joining an introductory lesson or visiting for training, Shahdag offers the facilities needed to make Skimo more accessible, comfortable, and connected to the wider resort experience.
